The Searsport area, north of Belfast, Maine, was first settled in the 1670's. The community began to blossom in the late 18th century and was incorporated as a town in 1845.
In the mid-1800's, Searsport was home to more sea captains than any other port. Searsport had a dozen shipyards and birthed 200 ships. Shipbuilders and sea captains built fabulous Greek Revival, Colonial, and Victorian residences here, and some of their exotic mementos are displayed in the eight buildings of Searsport's historic Penobscot Marine Museum.
With ten miles of coastline on Penobscot Bay, Searsport is the site of one of Maine's active ports. But Searsport is also a peaceful community for picnics, sailing, and mackerel fishing. The area is known for its antique shops and flea markets. The town boasts many 19th century homes, inns, bed and breakfasts, as well as unique restaurants, antique shops and quaint businesses.
Nearby Moose Point State Park combines rocky beach, woods, sea and sky, with cross-country skiing in the winter. Uninhabited Sears Island, which connects to the mainland with a causeway, offers more than 900 acres with birdwatching, hunting, fishing, hiking, walking, and beachcombing.
