Rockport, Maine is centrally located on the Maine coast, on the western rim of Penobscot Bay. The town is not quite four hours north of Boston, yet not quite on the beaten path - near but not on, scenic coastal Route One. Incorporated in 1791, Rockport separated from adjoining Camden, Maine in 1891 because of a dispute over the cost of constructing a bridge over the Goose River. In the 19th century, Rockport was a busy lime mining and production center, but today the village operates on a more relaxed schedule.
Rockport has a history as an artist's community dating back to the 1930's. Most of the eastern shore belonged to Mary Louise Curtis Bok, founder of Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music, and the town became a favorite summer resort for musicians. Today it is the home of the Bay Chamber Concerts (45 years) at the Rockport Opera House, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (50 years), the Maine Photographic Workshops (30 years), Rockport College, and many creative people. Residents and visitors enjoy frequent intimate concerts, plays, movies, and speakers.

Indian Point Lighthouse guards the eastern part of the harbor, which Rockport shares with Camden. Rockport still has an active lobster fishing fleet, and small boats sail from the town's public boat launch. Favorite places to visit in Rockport include lovely Beauchamp Point, the Samoset Resort, the open air Children's Chapel, and the Belted Galloway cattle at nearby Aldermere Farm.

Rockport's most famous summer visitor, Andre the Seal, entertained tourists for 25 years. Andre's annual journey from southern New England to Maine at the end of winter inspired a marble statue, a 1994 movie, and at least two children's books.
